Jacks remain in contention for national championship after day one

The Jacks remain on course for a fourth national championship in 13 years after the opening day at the NCAA Division-II Rowing Championships in New Jersey.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women turned in an impressive performance on the opening day of action on Friday, winning both their Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ heats to automatically qualify for Saturday’s Grand Finals

The Lumberjacks have previously won national titles in 2012, 2013 and 2023.

In the Eight Heat 2, the Lumberjacks’ Varsity 8+ crew, coxed by Sonja Scollon, edged out Embry-Riddle in a tight battle. 

Humboldt crossed the line in a time of 6 minutes, 59.24 seconds, holding off a late charge from Embry-Riddle, which finished just 1.17 seconds behind. 

Jefferson placed third.

The CPH Varsity 4+ boat, which is led by Emily Daniels, controlled Heat 1 from start to finish, posting a time of 7:43.21, followed by Western Washington in second, nearly 12 seconds back.

Seattle Pacific placed third in the heat.

Joining Humboldt in Saturday’s Grand Finals are Western Washington, which claimed the other V8 heat with a time of 6:58.54, and Central Oklahoma, which won the second V4 heat in a time of 7:41.36.
