NCS PLAYOFFS — Eight teams remain in contention for section crowns

By Ray Hamill — With the opening rounds of the North Coast Section basketball playoffs over, eight of the 13 local schools to qualify remain in contention, including six girls programs.

And all eight will be in action this weekend, including the three H-DNL teams that received a top seed and opening-round bye.

Four games involving local teams will take place on Friday night and four more on Saturday, including five here on the North Coast.

The two boys teams still fighting for a section title are Del Norte and St. Bernard’s.

The No. 3 seeded Warriors will host No. 11 Sonoma Valley in a Division-5 matchup in Crescent City on Friday night at 7, while the St. Bernard’s boys, who are seeded No. 1 in Division 6, will host No. 8 San Francisco Waldorf on Saturday night, also at 7.

Three local girls teams will also host their quarterfinals.

In Division 1, No. 4 Eureka will entertain No. 5 California on Friday night at 7, while in Division 3, top-seeded St. Bernard’s will host No. 8 San Domenico, also on Friday night at 7.

Rounding out the Friday night games, No. 6 Fortuna will travel to play No. 3 Middletown in Division 3, also at 7 p.m.

The Ferndale girls, who received the top seed in Division 6, will be the last local girls team to open the playoffs when they welcome No. 8 Victory Christian Academy to the Cream City on Saturday night at 7.

Earlier in the evening, the McKinleyville girls will try to keep their postseason going when they travel to play at Moreau Catholic in the Division-2 bracket at 5:30 p.m.

The Panthers, who defeated Heritage in their playoff opener on Wednesday, are seeded No. 5 in the bracket, while the Mariners are No. 4.

And rounding out the local contingent of teams still playing, the Hoopa girls, who are seeded No. 6 in Division 4, will play at No. 3 Sonoma Academy on Saturday night at 7.
