From football to wrestling, Huskies make quick transition

Fresh off their historic North Coast Section football championship nine days ago, some of the Fortuna players were back in action on the wrestling mats this past weekend.

And it was a successful transition for them.

The Huskies traveled to compete at a 16-team dual meet at Healdsburg High, placing sixth overall with a record of 3-2.

Adam Medeiros (4-0), Andrew Hansen (4-0) and Weylen McKnight (3-0) each went undefeated for Fortuna.

Medeiros, who played a big part in the football team’s success, comes into the wrestling season ranked third in the NCS and No. 28 in the state.

Also just off the football field, Joey Pontes and Levi Nyberg each got their wrestling seasons off to a good start, going 3-1 and 4-1, respectively.

James Owsely (2-1) and Asa McKenzie (2-2) each also fared well for the Huskies, who are expected to challenge for the Humboldt-Del Norte League title this winter.

Fortuna defeated Napa (43-24), Drake (55-9) and Amador Valley (48-27), while losing to Ukiah (30-40) and Shasta (34-42).

The Huskies’ next dual meet will be their league opener against Del Norte on Jan. 2, in an early showdown between two of the league favorites.
