Giants split doubleheader to open the Ashland tournament

The Northern Humboldt Giants split a pair of 4-3 games to open the Ashland Pilots tournament in Oregon on Saturday.

Joe Tanno continued his impressive summer on the mound and pitched six strong innings for the win against Roseburg in game one.

Tanno allowed five hits and one walk and struck out seven.

Del Norte’s Ethan Thomas pitched one inning in relief for the save.

Four different Giants players accounted for five hits, including Ty Ghisetti, who finished 2-for-4.

William Bommelyn, Ben Lukens and Braden Meadows each also had a base hit in the win.

In game two, the Giants suffered their first loss of the summer, falling to North Medford.

Finn Warner pitched 2.1 innings and took the loss, walking three and striking out three.

Bommelyn continued to impress and finished 2-for-3, as did his Del Norte High teammate Ethan Thomas.

Another Del Norte player, Saxton Taylor, also had a good day and finished 2-for-4, while Meadows added another hit.

The 6-1 Giants will close out the two-day round robin tournament with a game against the host team on Sunday.

The Giants will host their own eight-team tournament in Arcata next weekend, beginning on Friday.

In addition to the Giants, Humboldt Eagles and Southern Humboldt 76ers, the tourney will also feature teams from Ukiah, Trinity, Portland, Sutter and Marysville.
