By Ray Hamill — Six weeks after resigning as Athletic Director at Eureka High, Kristie Christiansen has found a new home at Fortuna.

The Huskies announced this week that Christiansen is the school’s new Dean of Students.

“I’m excited about it,” she said. “It was an opportunity that presented itself at the right time.”

Christiansen resigned her position at Eureka High in late July, citing persistent “personal attacks” from a member of the Eureka City Schools District Board as her reason for leaving.

She served as the school’s AD for five years and was also a long-time coach for the Loggers

Eureka City Schools District Superintendent Fred Van Vleck has declined to comment on the controversy.

The Huskies, however, are happy she has joined their team.

Fortuna principal Clint Duey said this week that “Fortuna High School is excited to welcome Kristie Christiansen to the Husky family,” adding that “Kristie brings a ton of experience in the field of athletics, Avid, and student transition.”

Just how much Christiansen will be involved with Husky sports remains to be seen, but her influence is bound to be felt in lots of ways.

“I’m looking forward to working with their leadership team,” she said.

One of the most highly regarded ADs in the entire North Coast Section, Christiansen said at the time of her resignation that the persistent personal attacks from the Eureka City Schools District Board member had become “too expensive” for her family to continue to deal with it.

“Basically for the last two-and-a-half years I’ve been dealing with a lot of personal attacks from a Eureka City Board member,” she said at the time. “And I was hoping they would be professional about it and hoping it would go away, but it hasn’t.”

The Loggers’ loss, however, is now the Huskies’ gain.

“I’m going to miss my Eureka High family,” she said after joining the Huskies. “It’s a great opportunity for me at this time and I’m very excited, but I’m leaving a lot of things I have invested in.”

Duey went on to say that “Fortuna High School prides itself in hiring top notch educators who have demonstrated high levels of integrity, and always put the needs of students first.

“We look forward to supporting Kristie as she transitions from the classroom into the world of administration, and we are excited to see the positive impacts she will have on the lives of Fortuna High Students.”
