By Ray Hamill — The Humboldt Crabs were forced to cancel their final two games of the season over the weekend after members of the team tested positive for COVID-19, bringing a premature end to another hugely successful summer for the long-time local club.

On Friday night, the Crabs won what turned out to be their final game, 7-1 over the Sacramento Yankees.

Most notably, Kaden Riccomini pitched six strong innings for his team-best seventh win of the summer, while former Eureka Logger Ethan Fischel closed out an outstanding debut season with the team with two more hits.

The win was the 14th straight for the Crabs, who finished up 39-6.

All three local players — Fischel, Caleb Ruiz and Aidan Morris — enjoyed big seasons with the team.

Fischel was one of the team’s most consistent threats at the plate all summer, averaging .338 and leading the team in doubles (17) and extra-base hits (25).

He also hit seven home runs to tie for the team lead with Andrew Allanson and Gabe Giosso.

The Crabs hit 41 home runs as a team, breaking the single-season record for most homers with a wood bat by one.

Ruiz, meanwhile, was one of the team’s most reliable arms on the mound in his debut summer with the Crabs.

The former St. Bernard’s standout was the team’s regular Wednesday night starter and finished 5-0 in eight starts, posting the second most wins on the team.

He closed out with an ERA of 2.35, while striking out 47 and walking 24 in 38.1 innings.

Rounding out the local contingent, the versatile Aidan Morris also enjoyed a memorable summer with the team, including playing against his younger brother Keenan on several occasions.

Morris averaged .225 with two home runs, including the record-breaking blast a week ago, while proving to be a tough out and walking 25 times, second most on the team.

Giosso batted a very impressive .443 to lead the team.
