Giants crowned district champs with their 30th win

The Northern Humboldt Giants claimed an expected district American Legion baseball championship with a 10-1 win over the Southern Humboldt Patriots at the Arcata Little League fields on Friday evening.

The victory was the third in three games in tourney play and lifts the Giants to 30-4-1 on the season.

Alex Gorge pitched four strong innings for the win, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and striking out four.

Finn McRae pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six.

Del Norte’s Ethan Thomas had a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, while Ty Ghisetti was 2-for-3 with a triple.

The Giants took control early with six runs in the first and added three in the third for a commanding lead.

William Bommelyn, Jared Dixon, Jason DeShaun, Vincent Agliolo and Miles Oliver each also had a hit in the win.

The Patriots reached the championship showdown after defeating the Humboldt Eagles earlier in the day for the second time in tournament play.

Cody Sauers had two hits in the loss and Cody Collins had one.
