Eureka girls sweep short-handed Arcata to complete perfect season

File photo – Kira Morris and the Loggers had reason to smile on Saturday as they closed out the spring season undefeated.

It was, in the words of head coach Sarah Fox, a special season for the Eureka girls softball team, one that saw the Loggers close out with a perfect 14-0 record.

On Saturday, they swept a doubleheader from a short-handed Arcata in both teams’ season finales, winning 13-0 and 12-2.

“This season has been a special one,” Fox said. “With the incredible leadership of our seniors, we went undefeated in a unique season with unprecedented circumstances.

“These athletes deserve the utmost respect for their relentless effort on and off the field. I am so proud to be their coach.”

Several players stepped up on the final day of the season, including the team’s four seniors, Wyatt Thurston, Sadie Hampton, Alexa Morehouse and Salina Socha-Wright.

Hampton had three hits on the day, including two triples and a double, while Morehouse pitched five shutout innings for the win in the opener, allowing just two hits and striking out five.

Kira Morris also had a big day, finishing with five hits, including a double, as well as pitching five innings of two-hit ball for the win in the nightcap.

Claire Maples had six hits on the day, including a triple, while Mariah Napoleon was 2-for-3 with a double in game two.

The Tigers, who close out the season 5-9, were playing without their starting pitcher Morgan Ford because of injury.

“My team knew we wouldn’t have Morgan but they wanted to play anyway,” Arcata head coach Teresa Wheat said. “Today was Eureka’s senior day, and my players felt it was important to show up to play.”

Five different Arcata players took a turn pitching.

Bella Volz-Broughton was 2-for-2 in her last softball game as a Tiger and was also one of the pitchers in the first game.

“We had a short season, plagued by inexperience and injuries, but the team supported each other through it all,” Wheat added.
