By Ray Hamill — So who is the best high school baseball team on the North Coast this spring?

We’re about to find out.

Once again the schedule makers have set us up for an intriguing finish to the season, with arguably the top three teams facing off over the final eight days.

That begins on Friday evening, when the Fortuna Huskies host the Eureka Loggers in a doubleheader at Newburg Park.

The Loggers had appeared to be the team to beat this season, until the Huskies did exactly that, rallying for a 3-1 win at Bomber Field on Wednesday afternoon.

It was the first loss of the season for the Loggers (7-1), who will be looking for some payback when the two teams conclude the series at Fortuna (7-2) on Friday.

Whoever wins this three-game series can lay claim to being the best team in the league this year.

Probably.

The surging Arcata Tigers (7-2), however, have won five straight and may have something to say about that when they play three games against Eureka to close out the season next week.

The Huskies have already taken two of three games against Arcata, and if they can do the same to Eureka, then no one can deny them the title of unofficial H-DNL champs this year, especially considering they also beat a good St. Bernard’s team in extra innings.

But if the Loggers can sweep Friday’s doubleheader and then take at least two of three from Arcata, then few can deny them the unofficial title.

And then there’s the Tigers, who are certainly making a late case for themselves, despite dropping two games earlier in the season to Fortuna, their only two losses so far.

If the Loggers sweep the Huskies on Friday, and then the Tigers win next week’s series against Eureka, well that would make for a very interesting debate.
