By Ray Hamill — Freshman Kieran McNulty continues to set a blistering pace in the swimming pool at Cal Poly, with an outstanding showing at this past week’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.

The former Arcata Tiger took first place in two events at the championships, becoming the first Mustang to do so since 2013.

On Thursday, McNulty took first in the 500-yard freestyle event in a time of 4 minutes, 23.30 seconds, the fourth fastest time ever by a Cal Poly swimmer in the event and the 63rd best time in the NCAA this season.

He followed that on Saturday with another big showing, taking first in the 1,650 free (one mile), finishing in a time of 15:31.43, almost nine seconds ahead of the field.

For his efforts, McNulty was named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.

McNulty also competed with the Humboldt Swim Club for several years.
