By Ray Hamill — H-DNL cross country, boys tennis and girls golf will all be in action again this coming week, as the season begins to heat up in all three sports.

In cross country, the league will hold a second meet at the Arcata Marsh on Wednesday afternoon, with the Arcata girls looking to continue their impressive start to the new season and carry on from a strong team showing at Del Norte this past week.

The Tigers took the top three spots in an exciting girls race, led by Anneli Macdonald.

On the boys side, an intriguing battle is shaping up between Fortuna and Eureka and between their top two individual runners.

As a team, the Huskies edged the Loggers by just a single point at the season opener, led by senior Collin Stockwell, who barely beat out Eureka senior Ian Bennett by less than five seconds.

The talented duo are expected to battle neck and neck all season, as are their respective teams.

Also in action this week, there is a full slate of H-DNL boys tennis matches scheduled for Tuesday, including league powerhouse Arcata at Eureka.

Rounding out Tuesday’s schedule, the Fortuna boys host St. Bernard’s, McKinleyville plays at North Coast Prep, and Ferndale travels to Del Norte.

In girls golf, meanwhile, McKinleyville senior Isabella Sundberg will look to continue her dominance in league play at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday.

Sundberg posted the low score at each of the opening two rounds of league play, shooting a pair of 88s and outscoring the next best golfer by 19 in week one and by 17 in week two.

The Arcata girls have posted the best team scores at each of the opening two events, with plenty of depth on this year’s team, including four of the top six finishers at the Redwood Golf and Country Club last Monday.

Wednesday’s round gets under way at 11 a.m.
