The Humboldt State women’s basketball team will join the ‘Race for Change’ this month and do its part to help bring attention to racial and social injustice.

The players will host a virtual 5K run, walk or bike ride from October 15-18, with all proceeds going to the African American Center for Academic Excellence on campus to help address issues around racial and social injustice.

“I have been very proud of our team in wanting to take a lead around issues of racial equality,” head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson said in a press release. “We want to keep the conversations going and be active in doing what we can in the fight to combat racism.

“Working toward progress in racial justice is extremely important to our women’s basketball program and one that we are passionate about. The wish is that this event continues to bring awareness and promote justice not only locally but throughout many communities. 

“We recognize there is a real problem in our society and we want to do our part in creating change. We want to thank UC San Diego for starting this initiative and we hope many others join in across the country.”

The ‘Race for Change’ is being organized on many university campuses.
