By Ray Hamill — Caleb Ruiz became the second Humboldt Eagles pitcher in less than a week to throw a no-hitter, as the 19U American Legion team swept yet another doubleheader on Friday afternoon,.

The Eagles have been almost unstoppable since opening the season a week ago, and are now 12-1 with five doubleheader sweeps.

And nowhere has that dominance been more evident than on the mound.

On Friday, they took both games against visiting Sacramento 911 at St. Bernard’s, winning 1-0 and 5-0.

“Today was just two good baseball teams getting after each other,” Eagles head coach Matt Tomlin said. “And it was outstanding pitching that carried us.”

Ruiz pitched all seven innings of the opener, allowing just three walks and striking out 10.

It was the second no-hitter for the Eagles this week, following Cameron Saso’s big performance on Sunday.

Hayden Bode, who also has been impressive through the early going, drove in the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Landon Gomes on a sac fly after earlier hitting a double.

“He’s just really been doing a great job with the bat,” Tomlin said of Bode.

Gomes also had a big game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double to lead the way on a five-hit team performance.

Ruiz and Branson Gans each also had a hit.

Merek Sears was equally impressive on the mound in game two, allowing just two hits and no walks in a complete-game performance.

“We knew pitching was going to be the strength of our team and it definitely showed today,” Tomlin said.

The Eagles offense gave Sears a five-run cushion in the bottom of the second inning and that was more than enough for the Arcata High graduate who struck out 14.

Parker Rodgers continued to impress at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Lane Thrap was all smiles as he stepped up to the plate on Friday.

Corbin Eichin added a double with two RBIs and a run, while Bode Joyner and Lane Thrap each also had a hit.

Gomes, Ethan Fischel and Jaden Gorge each also drove in a run.

The Eagles continued to play strong defense with no errors over the two games.
