By Ray Hamill — It’s time to vote North Coast sports fans, for your end of year sports awards, including local athletes of the year, as well as a coach of the year and team of the year.

And what a pool of candidates to choose from in a year that was full of memorable achievements in numerous sports by numerous local teams and athletes.

Voting for all four categories will run through the end of the year, with the winners being announced on New Year’s Eve, along with the first annual Humboldt Sports Sportsperson of the Year. as well as our choices for athletes, teams and coaches of the year.

TEAM OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS 

St. Bernard’s Football — When you win a state championship you get serious consideration for team of the year.

Del Norte Football — A first-ever NCS title for the program and a trip to the state championship, what a fantastic year for Del Norte football.

CR Men’s Basketball — Two months ago the Corsairs were listed as the worst community college basketball team in the state. Not any more.

Fortuna Boys Basketball — They thrilled us last winter like no other local team and now many of their players are still doing so at CR.

Del Norte Girls Basketball — Likewise for the Warriors, who enjoyed a breakout season for the ages.

St. Bernard’s Girls Basketball — No local team went further in basketball, and no one else won an NCS championship

McKinleyville Softball — The first-ever treble winners in the sport here on the North Coast, after winning the Big 5, the H-DNL tournament and the NCS.

Humboldt/Eureka Eagles — The 17Us were state champions and the 19Us reached the final four in state play. All in all a fantastic season for the American Legion program.

Fortuna Boys Soccer — The Huskies won a seventh straight league title and a third NCS crown in four years.

Arcata Girls XC — Few teams dominated in 2019 like the Tigers, with a freshmen class for the ages.

McKinleyville 9/10 Little League All-Stars — Reached the final two in state play, winning three straight elimination games at the state tournament.
