St. Bernard’s swept a doubleheader of home games on Tuesday night, as the boys improved to 2-1 with a comfortable 64-37 win over Round Valley, and the girls got the better of a good Laytonville team 48-46.

The St. Bernard’s boys got the action started, with the state championship football players joining the team for the first time.

Senior Lane Thrap led the way with 22 points, while junior Jake Fairfield finished with eight points.

The boys will play at the Eureka Logger Classic later this week, opening against Sutter on Thursday night at 9 p.m.

Del Norte 62, Brookings-Harbor 40

The Warriors also welcomed back their contingent of football players and posted their fifth win of the season in six games.

And several of them had an immediate impact, including Anthony Slayton, who scored a team-high 12 points in a balanced team performance, as did Omar Banuelos.

Alex Dodson and Kaleb Price each added 11 points in the win.

“It was the first time we’ve had our full team,” head coach Mark Slayton said. “Practice was fun on Monday and the kids had fun tonight playing together.

“We shot the ball really well in the third quarter.”
The Warriors will play at the round-robin Hidden Valley tournament later this week, opening against Phoenix on Thursday.

Ferndale 47, Laytonville 39

Emmitt Albee continued to impress on the basketball court for the Wildcats, scoring a team-high 10 points in an eight-point win at home to Laytonville on Tuesday night.

Garret Christiansen added eight points.

The Cats will play at the Stokes Tournament later this week, opening against Ukiah on Thursday afternoon.

South Fork 57, Willits 47

The Cubs won on the road Tuesday night, pulling out a 10-point win at Willits.

Tyler Bates scored 15 points in the win, while teammate Alex Harding finished with 13 points.

Wit the win, the Cubs improved to 7-4.

GIRLS

St. Bernard’s 48, Laytonville 46

The 8-1 Crusaders got some payback against the only team to have beaten them this season, with a two-point win.

The St. Bernard’s girls started slow and faced a big early deficit before turning things around and opening up a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter.

They had to withstand a late rally by a Laytonville team that is expected to challenge for a section title.

Josie Peterson and Verissa Moon each had big games in the win, with Peterson scoring a team-high 16 points, 10 of them in the third quarter,

Mackenzie Finck also played well, finishing with  10 points.

“I continue to be pleased with our defense,” head coach Mark Gardner said.

The Crusaders will play at the McKinleyville tournament this week, opening against Fortuna on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

South Fork 46, Willits 55

Kaylie Valk remained hot for the Cubs with a team-high 17 points, as the South Fork girls fell at Willits.

The second quarter was the difference in the game, as the home team outscored the Cubs 18-8 to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead at halftime.

“We didn’t rebound very well, which was a factor in the game,” head coach Chris Contreras said.

Kaylee Cotter added 13 points for the 6-6 Cubs. while Macy Yarbrough and Jade Johns each finished with six points.

The Cubs play at Round Valley on Friday.
