College Roundup — Mixed results for Humboldt State, Redwoods

The Humboldt State men’s basketball team defeated rival Chico State at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night, while the HSU women’s team lost.

The College of the Redwoods men’s team, meanwhile, remained winless on the season, dropping to 0-15 with a 79-64 loss to Ohlone at the Kris Kringle Tournament in Santa Rosa.

Jose Macaraeg scored a team-high 21 points in the loss, to go with three rebounds and a steal, while teammate Logan Thrap finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a couple of steals.

CR trailed by 18 at halftime and outscored Ohlone 40-37 in the second half.

HSU men win

Amari Green crashed the boards and scored the game-winning put-back as the Lumberjacks pulled out a dramatic 55-53 win over rival Chico State

“Our defensive effort generated our offensive opportunities,” HSU head coach Steve Kinder said. “Whenever we are playing at home we like to use the Lumberjack Arena fanfare as an extra sixth man boost.”

With the game knotted at 53-53 with 22 seconds remaining, HSU came out of a timeout with the plan of connecting with sharpshooting guard Jackson Strong. But when Strong’s trey missed the mark, Green got the rebound and scored the game-winning bucket with 1.2 seconds on the clock.

The Humboldt State women’s basketball team missed six consecutive free throw opportunities in the game’s closing minute en route to a heartbreaking 62-61 loss to Chico State, also at Lumberjack Arena.
