By Ray Hamill — The Fortuna boys took the top two spots in the latest round of the Humboldt-Del Norte League cross country season at Sequoia Park in Eureka on Wednesday.

Sophomore Collin Stockwell edged out senior teammate Agustin Garcinuno by just two seconds, taking first in a time of 17 minutes, 11 seconds.

“They took off really well, right off the bat,” Fortuna co-head coach Josh Quintal said of the duo. “It was really just a two-person race for them.”

The Huskies took the team event with a score of 35 points, followed by Arcata (54) and Eureka (60).

In the girls competition, Del Norte senior Julia De solini was first in a time of 21 minutes, 53 seconds.

Fortuna’s Maggie Stacy (23:36) was second, followed by Eureka’s KyleeAnna Zink-Clinton, five seconds further back in third.

“Maggie did really well last year, and she’s been frustrated with her performances this year,” Quintal said. “But (on Wednesday) she really had a good performance with her time.”

Fortuna’s Camrin Dolcini was fourth in a time of 22:59, with Eureka’s Hannah Kingstrom rounding out the top five with a time of 23:03.

Eureka won the team event with 24 points, nine less than Fortuna in second, with a depleted Arcata team in third (69).

Leader leader Riley Martel-Phillips, this week’s Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week who has won the first three league meets, did not participate.

Neither did McKinleyville’s Adam Vera on the boys side.

Northcoast Prep’s Amaya Bechler was sixth in the girls race, followed by McKinleyville’s Hope Kibby, Eureka’s Catherine Gierek, Northcoast Prep’s Bella Ely and Eureka’s Christina Smith.

In the boys race, Arcata’s Miska Evans placed third in a time of 18:09, followed by Brookings-Harbor’s Kaleb Carmesin (18:12) and Fortuna’s Bo Cox (18:25).

Arcata’s Miles Johnson, Brookings-Harbor’s Zachary Abblitt, Eureka’s Jaeden Taylor, Arcata’s Ben Narwold and Fortuna’s Andrew Hansen rounded out the top 10.
