The Fortuna Huskies kept their perfect league record in tact with a 5-0 win at South Fork on Wednesday evening.

In other local games on Wednesday, the Arcata and Eureka boys played out a 1-1 tie at Albee Stadium, while McKinleyville defeated Ferndale 10-0 and Del Norte beat St. Bernard’s 6-1.

In girls action, Eureka kept its unbeaten season in tact with a 4-0 win at home to Arcata, while McKinleyville got the better of Ferndale 5-1, Fortuna beat South Fork 7-1, and St. Bernard’s topped Del Norte 3-1.

The win for the Fortuna boys secures the league title outright for the Huskies, their sixth straight.

Fortuna came into the game having already won at least a share of the championship.

No scoring details were available from the Fortuna win.

The Huskies also now have secured the top seed for the league tournament next week.

Boys

Eureka 1, Arcata 1

The Tigers moved closer to securing third seed for next week’s league tournament after sharing the spoils with Eureka at Albee Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the tie, the Tigers go to 7-3-3 in league play, and can secure the three seed with a win against South Fork on Saturday, while the Loggers are now in fourth place at 7-4-2 and will play at McKinleyville in their regular season finale.

In a hard-fought game, the home team took a first-half lead only see the advantage slip away after the interval on an Arthur Frye penalty kick.

Freshman Luis Romero scored for Eureka midway through the opening half off an assist from sophomore Ian Bennett.

“It was a very close, competitive game,” Eureka head coach Alex Skweir said. “Both teams played really hard.”’

The Loggers got another strong performance between the posts from senior captain Skylar Carroll.

Carroll, who has kept Eureka in numerous games this year, did so again with several big saves against the Tigers.

Up front, Bennett kept the visiting defense on its toes with some dangerous runs onto some deep through balls.

“Ian was able to run onto them and really pressure the Arcata back line,” Skweir said.

For Arcata, Frye got the equalizing goal after Zane Clarke drew the PK.

“I thought Eureka outplayed us, to be honest,” Arcata head coach Ty Watkins said. “They moved the ball well against us and we were lucky to come out with a tie.”

Zach Oakland had a strong performance in defense for the Tigers.

“He did a good job keeping his composure,” Watkins said.

McKinleyville 10, Ferndale 0

The ever-reliable Jair Gonzalez has been a rock at the back for the Panthers all season, and on Wednesday he made a contribution at the other end of the field.

The McKinleyville defender scored his first goal of the season in a comfortable win over the Wildcats.

“All of our seniors scored, which was cool to see,” McKinleyville head coach Ryan Deppe said. 

McKinleyville hosts Eureka in the final regular season game for each on Saturday.

Girls

South Fork 1, Fortuna 7

The Huskies secured second place in the league standings and a first-round bye in next week’s league tournament with a comfortable win at South Fork on Wednesday.

With the win, Fortuna improves to 10-2-1 in the H-DNL, two wins ahead of Arcata, which fell 4-0 at Eureka.

Sophomore Sarah Killfoil continued her recent good run with three goals in the win, while teammates Lorelei Lorang, Nyah Cacren, Sarah Hohman and Casandra Cortes each scored one.

And the Huskies appear to be growing stronger as the season progresses.

“I’m seeing improvement,” head coach Kevin O’Neil said. “We moved the ball around better.”

The Fortuna coach also paid credit to a South Fork team that continues to battle.

“I want to credit South Fork, because they never gave up,” O’Neil said. “They kept playing.”

Senior captain Kylie Messenger scored the Cubs’ only goal and kept the visiting defense on their collective toes.

“She pressured us several times,” O’Neil said of Messenger. “But our defense held.”

St. Bernard’s 3, Del Norte 1

It was senior day for St. Bernard’s on Wednesday, and those seniors stepped up to lead the team to victory over Del Norte.

The Crusaders celebrated all five of their senior class before kickoff — Ally Del Grande, Jasa Sisemore, Maddie Costa, Tiersa Grummert and Maya Waterman — and those same seniors did more than enough to help knock off the Warriors for the second time this season.

And it wasn’t just the seniors who stepped up, with Marayah Tomlinson netting two of the team’s goals, one in each half.

Tomlinson opened the scoring in the first half on a nice strike from the edge of the box, and then made it 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring off a Del Grande pass up the middle,

Del Grande added the third goal midway through the second half, pouncing on a rebound off the opposing goalie to slot home.

Sisemore had a strong performance in the heart of defense, as did Costa in goal.

McKinleyville 5, Ferndale 1

The Panthers overcame a sluggish start to beat South Fork on Wednesday, piecing together a far stronger second half on the way to the win.

Mackenzie Bray and Jaycee Morais each netted twice in the win, while Rayn Tripp scored one, as the Panthers improved to 7-5-1 in league.

The in-form Morais had a big game in the heart of midfield for Mack, and scored a highlight goal on a wonderful strike from outside the penalty area.

“She had a phenomenal goal,” McKinleyville head coach Adam Canepa said. “From 20 yards out into the top corner. It was a beautiful shot.”
