The College of Redwoods women posted their second win of the young season in volleyball on Friday, splitting a pair of matches in San Jose.

The Corsairs fell in three games to Canada (25-21, 25-20, 25-22), and defeated San Jose City in three (25-21, 25-14, 25-9).

“We’re getting better,” Redwoods head coach Petra Lorenzi said of her young roster, which continues to show signs of promise.

Sophomore Elise Wilson and freshman Jessica Simon were particularly impressive.

Wilson, the team’s lone returning conference Honorable Mention from a year ago, finished with 42 digs over the two matches, to go with five aces against San Jose.

Simon, a freshmen out of Eureka, has been one of the top newcomers through the opening few weeks of the season.

The outside hitter had seven kills in each match, to go with 16 digs in the opener and eight aces over the two matches.

“We did a lot of things well,” Lorenzi said. “We’ve really been working on communicating and basically working together as a team. And we did that well today.”

Ashlynn Maddeaux added six kills in each match, while Alondra Ledezma had a big all-around day with 17 kills over the two matches to go with 12 digs in the opener and three aces in the second match.

Mikenzie Palotas also had five kills in the opener.

“I thought we did a great job of really working hard defensively,” Lorenzi said.

Setter Ariana Gallegos continues to mature and grow into the position, turning in one of her best performances of the season.

“She was probably our best performer today,” Lorenzi said. “She really kind of led the team on the court.”
