By Ray Hamill — With just three seniors on a roster of 10, the Fortuna Huskies will feature a relatively young lineup this year.

According to fourth-year head coach Lynsey Adams, however, the players have been steadily improving in practice, and slowly but surely coming together.

“I think they look good,” Adams said. “We have a younger team this year, so we’re still getting acquainted with each other.”

The Huskies feature three returning seniors — Jordyn Quin, Bailey Parker and Paige Johnson — whom Adams expects to lead the way.

All three saw substantial playing time a year ago on a team that went 7-16.

“We’ll rely on them for a lot of leadership out on the floor,” Adam said of the trio.

Among the younger squad members, sophomore Saige Grundman and junior Mckenzie Emmons are each expected to vie for time as setter, with each growing into more of a leadership role this year.

Sophomores Gracie Betts and Renee Metz and juniors Kenzie Hall, Zoe Zerlang and Amanda Flackus round out the roster, with all of them likely to see plenty of action on a relatively small squad.

It’s also a squad that appears to be coming together and developing good chemistry, something that the Huskies will be hoping to carry over into the games.

“They seem to enjoy each other’s company,” the coach said. “It’s still early, but they seem motivated to try and improve.”

Adams also hopes her players can compete in what she sees as a competitive Big 5.

“I sure hope so, that’s always the plan,” she said. “There’s some tough teams in our league, and it’s always the goal to compete.”

The Huskies are off to a 2-1 start with victories over Burney and Arcata last week.

The Fortuna girls will play at Willits on Tuesday before hosting Arcata on Thursday.
